Plugin Pu’uhonua o Wai’anae
Wai’anae, Hawaii
Pu‘uhonua o Wai‘anae, the largest houseless community on O‘ahu, is a rare example of self-determined housing led by a Native Hawaiian community. After years of threats of government sweeps, community leader Twinkle Borge successfully negotiated with the governor to prevent displacement. In 2020, the community raised funds to purchase 20 acres inland, relocating on their own terms.
In Phase 3 of development, the community is building fifteen Plugin Houses, along with a Hale ʻĀina, a shared kitchen, bathroom, and laundry facility, all constructed by volunteers. Once complete, the agri-village will be home to around 250 residents. Rooted in care, culture, and collective leadership, Pu‘uhonua o Wai‘anae provides a safe, supportive environment for those facing systemic barriers to housing and stability.
